MITCHELL, RA., Croix De Guerre, France dated on reverse '1914-1918', bronze Star on ribbon, (WILLIAM MITCHELL - Came from South Croydon, Surrey and served in France with 324th. Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was Mentioned in the Despatches of Sir Douglas Haig, - London Gazette 23 December 1918, and awarded the Croix de Guerre, France, on the recommendation of General Nollet, Officer Commanding, French 36th. Army Corps - "Elite Non-Commissioned Officer who displayed fine qualities of courage and coolness while his battery was detached to the 36th.Army Corps during operations on the Somme in August and September 1918" - London Gazette 21 July 1919. On being discharged from the Army the recipient served as a Constable with the Metropolitan Police and the application for his medals was submitted by the Commissioner on 12 January 1921.) Sold with verification, copy London Gazette entries, copy hand written in French of the 'Ordre General' from General Nollet, for the Croix de Guerre together with English translation, recipient's original ribbon bar.
