FM. bust (200386 Pte.-A.Sjt. 4/Hamps.R.) : (ERNEST PEARCE - Came from Winchester, Hampshire his family being resident at 39 Brassy Road, and in November 1914 was serving in India with 1/4th.Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. On 18 March 1915 the Battalion moved to Mesopotamia ((5a) and entered the war as part of the Expeditionary Force. Whilst serving in Mesopotamia with the Headquarters Staff, the recipient was promoted to the Rank of Acting Serjeant and Mentioned in Despatches on two occasions (London Gazette dated 12 March 1918 and London Gazette dated 21 February 1919) and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (announced in London Gazette dated 22 September 1919) "In recognition of valuable services rendered with the British Forces in Mesopotamia." : One company of the Battalion was captured at the fall of Kut al Amara on 29 April 1916 and the remainder of the Battalion was temporarily amalgamated with the 5th.Battalion The Buffs from 14 February until 19 June 1916 : The Battalion was deployed for service in Persia from 2 January 1918, and South Russia in August 1918, with one platoon at Baku and 'C' Campany at Krasnovodsk, returning to Persia for the remander of 1918 through to 1919. The recipient's awards are also confirmed in the Regimental Journals of April 1918 (MID); July 1919 (MID) and October 1919 (MSM).)
