CAPTAIN ALEXANDER LYLE WATT,THE BLACK WATCH
Memorial Plaque - ALEXANDER LYLE WATT (Born 5 November 1882, the son of George Watt of Sanct Mary's , Strathern Road, Broughty Ferry, Dundee and later West Bell Street, Dundee: He was educated at the High School of Dundee and by private tutors and attended The University of Dundee and St Andrews University where he studied the arts and law: He was subsequently to serve in the Office of Procurator Fiscal for the City of Perth: In 1907 he was Commissioned into the 3rd.(Dundee Highland)Volunteer Battalion,The Black Watch(Royal Highlanders) and on 1 April 1908 he was appointed as a Captain from the Volunteer Force to 5th.(Angus and Dundee) Battalion,The Black Watch: At the outbreak of World War One he was attached to 1st/5th. Battalion, Black Watch and served with the Battalion in Fance and Belgium: On 10 March 1915, the Battalion was engaged in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle: Captain Watt was in command of two Platoons from 2 Company being employed as a working party, digging trenches and fortifying the extreme left of the Battalion position, when he was killed. He is buried at Guards Cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy. He is commemorated on the Universirty of Dundee War Memorial and the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle: Captain Watt was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal, the medals were sent to his brother at Napier, New Zealand.) : Sold with verification, copy extract from Battalion War Diary and related research: NEF - £295
