SERJEANT CHARLES BRYANT, 13TH. LIGHT DRAGOONS : LIGHT BRIGADE IN THE CRIMEA
Crimea Medal 1854-56, bar, 'Sebastopol', officially engraved naming by Hunt & Roskell in bold upright serif capital letters - Private CHARLES BRYANT, 13th.Light Dragoons; Turkish Crimea Medal 1855, Sardinian reverse, 'La Crimea 1855', fitted with replacement swiveling ring suspender, privately impressed naming in bold upright capital letters - Corpl. CHAS. BRYANT. 13 Hussars : (CHARLES BRYANT - Born at Coombe Down, Bath, Somerset and baptiised at Monkton Coombe on 28 December 1835. Enlisted at Westminster on 15 March 1854 giving his trade as a Tailor. Sent to Regimental Depot at Birmingham on 1 April 1854. Promoted to Corporal from 3 October 1854 and to Serjeant from 1 May 1855. Joined the Regiment in the Crimea on 1 August 1855. Sent to Scutari from 15 September 1855 and is recorded on the Nominal Roll of men of the Regiment at the Cavalry Depot, Scutari as being 'On Duty' there from 16 September 1855. Reduced to the Rank of Private from 16 November 1855, by Regimental Court Martial for "being absent when Orderly Serjeant". Promoted to Corporal from 18 June 1861. Discharged at Aldershot, Invalided as Serjeant 11 November 1864. Served a total of ten years eight months and was living in Manchester following discharge but in the Census of 1871 he is recorded as a Railway Signalman residing in Islington, London. He appears to have moved to Newbury, Berkshire and returned to his old trade of Tailor (Census of 1901). He died at Newbury on 23 March 1916.) : Sold with verification, copy Baptism Record, copy Census Records copy entry from 'Honour The Light Brigade' where Canon Lummis mistakenly shows the recipient as 'Name does not appear on the Medal Roll', whereas his name is clearly recorded on roll W.O.100/24 at Pages 466 and 473, as entitled to both Medal and Bar for Sebastopol. Contact marks to rim of first medal with some loss to final letters of 'Dragoons' but all naming still perfectly legible. A nice pair to a man who served with the Light Brigade in the Crimea.
