Highrs (Gordon Highlanders); Khedive's Bronze Star dated '1882', unnamed as issued : (In response to internal unrest in Egypt, caused by support for Egyptian nationalism and resentment of foreign involvement in it's affairs, in August 1882, the British Government sent a large military expeditionary force to Egypt in order to protect British lives and interests. The Gordon Highlanders were part of this force and landed at Port Said on 1 September 1882. The force marched west towards Tel-El-Kebir, and by moving across the desert at night was able to surprise the Egyptians before sunrise on 13 September 1882. Despite all the prepared enemy fortifications, which the British were able to overcome under heavy fire and fierce hand to hand fighting, they secured a resounding victory, effectively ending the revolt. However in 1884 following further unrest in Egypt, Britain was prompted to send a punitive expedition to the Sudan. Again the Gordon Highlanders formed part of this expeditionary force which landed at Suakin on 19 February 1884. Ten days later, on 29 February 1884 the Gordons were in action at El-Teb, where half the Battalion was called upon to reinforce the defensive square formation, whilst the remaining half continued to protect the flanks. At the Battle of Tamaai on 13 March 1884, the fanatical enemy managed to infiltrate the square of the 2nd..Brigade and inflicted significant casuatles but then came under fire from the 1st. Brigade, which included the Gordon Highlanders. Despite being attacked on all four sides simultaneously, the 1st. Brigade fought steadily, held it's ground and at a critical moment came to the assistance of the broken British square. The recipient is confirmed on the Medal Rolls as being present at, the Battle of Tel-El-Kebir; the landing at Suakin and both actions of El-Teb and Tamaai).
