2120 PRIVATE NORMAN RORRISON, 4TH. (ROYAL IRISH) DRAGOON GUARDS
Egypt Campaign Medal 1882-89. dated reverse, bar, 'Tel-El-Kebir', correctly engraved naming - 2120 Pte. N. RORRISON, 4th. Dn.Gds.(Dragoon Guards); Khedive's Bronze Star, dated '1882', unnamed as issued : (NORMAN RORRISON - Born in Scotland around 1859 and attested at Edinburgh on 2 August 1877 when he was posted to the 4th.(Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards. On 9 August 1882, the recipient was present with the Regiment when it embarked from Southampton aboard the Transport 'City of New York', arriving at Alexandria on 21 August 1882. He took part in the 'Battle of Tel-El-Kebir' on 13 September 1882, but on the return passage home to England the weather was bad and rather rough while crossing the Bay of Biscay, the motion of the ship telling very serverely on the horses. Out of a total of 260, forty-nine died, including six Officer's chargers. The recipient too succumbed to sickness from which he died, he being the only man of the Regiment to die during the journey home. He was just 23 years of age at the time of his death. Some seventeen Officers, and approximately 320 Other Ranks from the Regiment received the medal with bar for Tel-El-Kebir.)
