Third China War Medal 1900, bar, 'Relief of Pekin' (Pntr. 2Cl. HMS. Phoenix); 1914-15 Star (Ptr.); British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-19 (Ptr.1); Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, GVR., Admiral's bust obverse (Painter 1Cl. HMS. Sapphire) : (ALLAN SCOTT BENOKE - Born 30 January 1876 at Paddington Green, London, a painter by trade when on 20 February 1898, he joined the Royal Navy at HMS. 'Vivid 2' as a Painter 2nd.Class : Moved to HMS.'Howe' from 2 November 1898 and joined tthe crew of the Sloop, HMS. 'Phoenix' from 20 February 1900. He was still serving in 'Phoenix' when the ship took part in the Third China War and he landed at Tientsin on 4 August 1900. He remained in 'Phoenix' until 14 May 1903 on which date he returned to 'Vivid II'. He continued to serve both at sea in numerous ships and at various shore establishments before joining HMS. 'Sapphire' from 31 October 1911. He was serving in 'Sapphire' on 29 May 1913, when he was awarded the Naval Long Service & Good Conduct medal. He subsequently served in 'Highflyer' and 'Diana' before joining the cruiser 'Charybdis' from 30 July 1914. At the outbreak of war he was still serving in 'Charybdis' but moved to 'Vivid II' on 6 February 1915 from where he was Shore Pensioned as unfit for further service on 12 July 1915. He was awarded the Silver War Badge. He died on 25 July 1920 at the age of just 44years, and was buried in Holy Trinity Churchyard, Ilfracombe, Devon.
