4539 PRIVATE ARTHUR HARPER, 2ND. RIFLE BRIGADE

Queen's Sudan Medal 1896-97, officially engraved naming in upright serif capital letters - 4539 Pte. A. HARPER 2/R. Bde : (Rifle Brigade); Khedive's Sudan Medal 1896-1908, bar, 'Khartoum', unnamed as issued : (ARTHUR WILLIAM HUGH HARPER - Born around June 1876 in Gibraltar, a shoemaker by trade when he attested at Gosport on 8 July 1896, and was posted to the 2nd. Rifle Brigade. Served at home until 22 September 1897 when the battalion was sent to Malta. The battalion was subsequently deployed to Egypt from 12 July 1898 from where it was to take part in the operations for the reconquest of the Sudan. The recipient was SERIOUSLY WOUNDED at the Battle of Omdurman (Khartoum) on 2 September 1898 (confirmed in recipient's Service Papers). He returned home to England on 22 November 1898 and was posted to the Regimental Depot., where he was to remain and as such he did not take part in the Second Boer War in South Africa. He was transferred to Army Reserve from 7 July 1903 and discharged at Winchester on 7 July 1908 on 'termination of his first period of limited engagement', then having completed twelve years service.) : Sold with verification and copy Service and Discharge Papers.
