India General Service Medal 1895, bars, 'Punjab Frontier 1897-98', 'Tirah 1897-98' (4661 Lce.Corpl.,2nd.Bn.,KO.York.Lt.Infy.); Queen's South Africa Medal, bars, 'Belmont', 'Modder River','Transvaal','Wittebergen' (4661 Corl., 2:Yorks:Lt Inft.); King's South Africa Medal, bars, 'South Africa 1901', 'South Africa 1902' (4661 Serjt: York:L.I.) : (JOHN DALE - Born at Sheffield, Yorkshire around 1875, served with 2nd.Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry in the Tirah Expeditionary Force of 1897, and would doubtless have been present with the Regiment during the action against the Afridi Tribe at the Shin Kamar Pass on 29 January 1898 : A hard fought action in which the Regiment suffered the loss of three Officers killed with a further three severely wounded; twenty-eight Other Ranks killed and a further thirty wounded : Four Distinguished Conduct Medals were awarded to men of the Regiment for this action : The recipient later served with the Regiment in South Africa from 1899 being present in November of that year at the actions of Belmont and Modder River : He was taken prisoner by the Boers at Nooitgedacht on 13 December 1900, but subsequently released : He returned home to England in 1903 and was placed on Army Reserve : He married at the Parish Church of St Silas Sheffield on 7 March 1905, at which time his profession is shown as Policeman.) : Sold with verification; copy Casualty Roll which incorrectly records his Service Number as 4660 ; copy Marriage Certificate; copy photograph of the recipient in uniform, taken from 'Sheffield At The Front' and related research.
