478 PRIVATE FRANCIS ROURKE, NEW SOUTH WALES INFANTRY CONTINGENT

Egypt Campaign Medal 1882-89, undated reverse, bar, 'Suakin 1885', correctly engraved naming - 478 Pte. F. ROURKE, N.S.W. Infy.; Khedive's Bronze Star, dated 1884-6', unnamed as issued. (FRANCIS ROURKE - Embarked on 3 March 1885 from Sydney for Egypt with the New South Wales Infantry Contingent, aboard the SS 'Iberia'. Arrived at Suakin 29 March 1885. Left Suakin 17 May 1885 aboard the Transport SS 'Arab' and disembarked at Sydney 23 June 1885. Whilst in Egypt the Contingent was employed in the operations up the River Nile and in the vicinty of Suakin. This was the first occasion on which Australian troops had been deployed on service outside Australia. Only some five hundred men of the NSW. Infantry received this medal and the bar for 'Suakin 1885' : Sold with verification and related research. Excessively Rare EF - £3500
