1939-45 Star; Pacific Star; War Medal 1939-45 (all unnamed as issued); Efficiency Medal, bar 'Territorial', GVR. Crowned bust in Coronation robes, (4796850 Sjt. B.A. DAVIS, 4-Linc. R.) : (BERTIE ALBERT DAVIS - Born 11 August 1905 at Cowbitt, Lincolnshire : Prior to World War Two, he had served with 4th.(Territorial) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment and later the 5th.Battalion, The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire) which was subsequently converted to reconnaissance duties with the 18th. (East Anglian) Infantry Division and became 18th. Reconnaissance Battalion. Nicknamed 'The Recce Corps' with the motto 'Only The Enemy In Front'. With which the recipient served in Malaya, and was later to take part in the defence of the Island of Singapore : The Battalion was conveyed to Singapore from Bombay aboard the converted liner RMS. 'Empress of Asia,' which on 5 February 1942 was attacked and sunk by Japanese dive-bombers. Remarkably the troops and crew all made it to safely, having abandoned their sinking ship off Sultan Shoal Lighthouse, but the Battalion lost most of its equipment with the men coming ashore with nothing other than the clothes they were wearing.
