BEST Gordon Highrs: : (THOMAS BEST - Born around 1872 at Jedburgh, Roxburgh, a tailor by trade when he attested for the Gordon Highlanders at Glasgow on 7 January 1896 : Posted to the 2nd. Battalion and served at home until 14 October 1897 when he was transferred to the 1st.Battalion for service in India : In October 1898 whilst still in India he re-joined the 2nd. Battalion and on 24 September 1899 was sent to South Africa for service in the Second Boer War : He remained in South Africa until 2 January 1902 when the Battalion was posted to India : He returned home on 24 January 1904 and two days later was transferred to Army Reserve : On 6 January 1912 he was discharged on termination of his period of engagemant, then having completed 16 years service : With the outbreak of the First World War, he rejoined his former Battalion as Private 3/7327 and on 22 February 1915 entered the war in France : Just three weeks later on 13 March 1915 he was KILLED IN ACTION, his age was then recorded as 42 years : He has no known grave and is commemorated on Le Touret Memorial : He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star; British War Medal and Victory Medal 1914-19, which were claimed by his elder brother James Best of Doorpool, Bonchester Bridge, Hawick.) : Sold with verification, copy Service Record, copy CWGC. information and other related research. - NEF £1450
