780049 PRIVATE, L.FARMER, 29-LONDON REGIMENT:

British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-18 (780049 Pte., 29-Lond. R.) : (LEONARD FARMER - The 29-London Regiment was initially formed in June 1915 at Guildford, Surrey as a Provisional Battalion for Home Service. It only became the 29-London Regiment on 1 January 1917 : The recipient had enlisted on 19 February 1916 and as such would have been one of the original members of the Battalion when it was first formed : In March 1917 the Battalion moved to Colchester and then on 5 February 1918 it again moved to Walton-on-the-Naze : However from June 1918, one Company was posted to the SYREN FORCE and was sent for service at Murmansk, in North Russia : A Platoon from this Company was further detached for the ELOPE FORCE invasion of Archangel in early August 1918 : Both SYREN and ELOPE were incorporated into North Russia Expeditionary Force (NREF) although each remained independent commands in 1918-19 : The Murmansk ORBAT for 15 December 1918 shows the Company 180 strong and based at Kandalaksha, south of Murmansk on the White Sea : They were part of 238th.Infantry Brigade which included 11th.Royal Sussex Regiment, but also French, Finnish and White Russian troops : They were primarily used for garrison duties and saw very little in the way of fighting : The recipient was subsequently returned to England and transferred into the 6/South Wales Borderers from which he was discharged on 22 July 1919 : He was also entitled to the Silver War Badge.) : Sold with verification Scarce NEF - £175
