Glanfield, W.Rid.R.); Memorial Plaque - John Lester Glanfield : (JOHN LESTER GLANFIELD - Born 18 June 1885 in the Parish of Battersea, London, a general labourer by trade, residing in Bermondsey at the date of first attestation, 12 October 1904: Placed on Army Reserve from 12 October 1907 but with the outbreak of war was recalled for service on 6 August 1914 : Entered the war in France with 2nd.Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) on 13 August 1914 : On 22 October 1914 the Battalion was in billets at Rue d'Ouvert, when just before dawn orders were received to immediately turn out and proceed up to the line : It became apparent that the 1st.Cheshire Regiment in Volaines had been rushed at dawn and the enemy had broken through : This in turn caused the 1st.Dorset Regiment on the left of the 'Dukes' to retire leaving a gap of about one mile between the battalions : The 13th.Brigade received orders to attack but owing to confusion their assault was not successful : Three Companies of the 'Dukes' attacked in a NE. direction towards Violaines, their left having been thrown back on the ridge : The attack was carried out quite well up to within 500 yards of the Germans but troops on their left failed to move so Companies dug in where they were and eventually had to be withdrawn at about 02.00 am on the 23rd. October : Casualties were one man killed, seven wounded and two missing : The recipient was the only man killed in this action, he has no known grave, although his Service Papers record that, "man buried in trench at Rue d'Ouvert near La Bassee" : It would seem that later his burial place could not be identified and he is therefore commemorated on Le Touret Memorial : His entitlement to the 'Aug-Nov 1914' clasp is confirmed) : Sold with verification; copy Service Papers; copy Birth & Marriage Certificates; 1901 & 1911 Census Records; CWGC. & 'Soldiers Died' information; copy extracts taken from Battalion War Diary: Plaque cleaned but all items EF - £425
