MFA.; Silver War Badge, No. RN11343: (EDWARD SAUNDERS - Verified on Medal Roll as serving in the Hospital Ship 'Devanha' : Silver War Badge No. RN11343 identfied as issued to the recipient on 8 June 1918, shown on roll as Messing Hand MMR. : The hospital ship, HMHS. 'Devanha' a converted passenger cargo liner was requisitioned by the Admiralty on 16 September 1914. It was initially used as a troopship, and took part in the Dardenelles Campaign. In April 1915 it was converted to a hospital ship and on 9 April 1916, picked up the survivors of the 'Chantala' after that ship had been torpedoed and sunk, conveying them to Malta. Operated in the Mediterranean but also served in the Persian Gulf, East Africa and Bombay-Suez, between 1916 and April 1919, when it was converted back to a troopship.
