Crimea Medal 1854-56, bars, 'Balaklava', 'Inkermann', 'Sebastopol', officially impressed naming - J. McFADYAN, 2nd. Dragns. (Dragoons).; Army Long Service & Good Conduct Medal, Victoria, small letter reverse, scroll suspender, officially impressed naming - 1156 Corpl. J. McFADGEN, 2nd. Dragoons; Turkish Crimea Medal, Sardinian reverse, fitted with replacement claw and swiveling ring suspender, unnamed as issued. (JAMES McFADGEN (McFADYAN) - Born around 1833 at Girvan, Ayrshire, enlisted in the 2nd Dragoons in 1852 as Private 1156. Served in the Crimea for almost two years and is confirmed as being present with the Regiment at the Battles of Balaklava and Inkermann and at the siege of Sebastopol. Promoted to the rank of Corporal in 1865 and to Serjeant in 1870. Discharged in 1873 then having completed in excess of 21 years service, Character shown as 'Very Good' being in possession of four Good Conduct badges. At Balaklava the 2nd. Dragoons formed part of Brigadier-General James Yorke Scarlett's, Heavy Brigade and made a desperate and successful charge against a much larger body of Russian cavalry which allowed the survivors of the Light Brigade to retire up the Valley of Death without sustaining further casualties. "Notwithstanding that the ground was anything but favourable for the attack of the Dragoons, no obstacle could check their advance, and they charged into the Russian column, which although far superior in numbers, soon sought safety in flight". In this action the 2nd. Dragoons suffered two men killed with a further fifty-three men wounded.
