K-22746 ALFRED THOMAS DEW, STOKER 1ST.CLASS, ROYAL NAVY : KILLED IN ACTION AT JUTLAND SERVING IN HMS. 'INDEFATIGABLE'

1914-15 Star; British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-19 (K.22746 Sto.1 . RN.) : (ALFRED THOMAS DEW - Born at Exeter, Devon on 3 November 1891, joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker Class II at HMS. 'Vivid II' on 24 August 1910. Moved to HMS.'Indefatigable' from 24 February 1911 and was advanced to Stoker Class 1 from 29 February 1912. He was still serving in the ship when it went into action with the 2nd.Battle-Cruiser Squadron at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916. At about 16.00hrs, 'Indefatigable' was hit around the rear turret by a salvo of two or three shells from the German Battlecruiser SMS. 'Von der Tann', and almost immediately fell out of formation to starboard and began sinking towards the stern and listing to port. Shortly afterwards the ship received more hits, one to the forecastle and another to the forward turret and at 16.03hrs the forward magazine exploded. Smoke and flames gushed from the forward part of the ship and large pieces of debris were thrown some two hundred feet into the air. Of the total complement of 1019 men only three survived to be rescued by German ships. The recipient was killed in this action, he has no known grave and is commemorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial.
