LIEUTENANT-COLONEL C.G. NURSE, INDIAN ARMY, LATE ROYAL IRISH FUSILIERS

Egypt Campaign Medal 1882-89, undated reverse, bar, 'El-Teb_Tamaai', correcttly engraved naming - Lieut. 2/R. Ir. Fusrs. (Royal Irish Fusiliers); 1914-15 Star - Attempted erasure of naming; British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-19 - Lt.Col.; Khedive's Bronze Star dated '1884' - unnamed as issued : (CHARLES GEORGE NURSE - Born around 1862 at Barnham, Suffolk, granted a Commission as Second Lieutenant with the Royal Irish Fusiliers from 22 January 1881. Promoted to Lieutenant in July 1881 he served with the Regiment in India and is shown in various Army Lists as Interpreter or Station Staff Officer, Kolapore. Served with 2nd. Battalion of the Regiment in the Sudan Campaign 1884 and is confirmed as being present at the battles of El-Teb and Tamaai in December of that year. He was seconded to the Indian Staff Corps and in March 1885 was appointed to the Bombay Staff Corps. serving with the Zaila Field Force during 1890, combating the activities of the 'Mad Mullah' in Somaliland. He was promoted to Captain in the Indian Staff Corps in January 1892 and Major in January 1901. Appointed Lieutenant-Colonel 113th. Infantry in January 1907, he retired from the Indian Army on 23 January 1909. With the outbreak of war in 1914 he was recalled to active service and reappointed Lieutenant-Colonel from retirement. He was attached to 3rd.Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment and served on the Western Front from 12 May 1915. He was a well known and highly respected entomologist and wrote many articles on the subject, discovering a number of previously unknown species. In later life he lived at 'Redcote', Rusthall Park, Tunbridge Wells, Kent and died on 5 November 1933.
