SS.115423 C. E. WHITE, STOKER 1ST.CLASS : HMS. 'INVINCIBLE' : KILLED IN ACTION AT JUTLAND, 31 MAY 1916 :

1914-15 Star; British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-19 (SS.115423 Sto.1. RN.); Memorial Plaque (Charles Edward White) : (CHARLES EDWARD WHITE - Born 14 February 1897 at Alton, Hampshire, a builders labourer by trade, joined the Royal Navy on 17 February 1914, giving his year of birth as 1896 : He joined HMS. 'Queen' as a Stoker Class 2 on 28 June 1914 and transferred to the Battlecruiser HMS. 'Invincible' from 3 August 1914 being advanced to Stoker Class 1 from 17 February 1915 : He was still serving in 'Invincible', the lead ship of the Third Battlecruiser Squadron, when it went into action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916 : He was killed in action when 'Invincible' suffered a direct hit to the midships magazine and the resultant explosion caused the ship to break in two and sink within ninety seconds with the loss of all but six of the crew of 1032 Officers and ratings : The recipient has no known grave and is commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial : He was the son of Charles Edward and Ellen Elena White of Amery Street, Alton, Hampshire and was just 19 years of age at the date of his death.) : Sold with original card box of issue for 1914-15 Star containing original paper medal envelopes; original Admiralty forwarding document for all three medals; original envelope for Plaque addressed to recipient's father; verification; copy Service Record; copy Census Record entries; copy CWGC. information; related research : Plaque contained in original card cover with inner white paper envelope : Original silk ribbons : The group was last sold by DNW. as Lot 930 in their sale of 27 September 2016 when it achieved a Hammer price of £480 : EF - Reserved
