1914-15 Star, (TZ.1359 G.H.March, AB. RNVR.); British War Medal; Victory Medal 1914-19 (TZ.1359 G.March, AB., RNVR.); Memorial Plaque - George Herbert March : (GEORGE MARCH - Born 23 March 1890 at Gateshead-on-Tyne, a Shunter employed with North Eastern Railway Company, when on 11 November 1914 he enlisted in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve and was posted to Hawke Battalion, Royal Naval Division. In June 1915 he joined the Battalion in Gallipoli and is recorded as receiving a bullet wound to the scalp on 19 June 1915. Admitted to hospital in Gallipoli from 23 September 1915 suffering from jaundice and subsequently transferred to RN. Hospital, Malta from 9 October 1915. Returned to Battalion from hospital on 24 November 1915. Embarked from Mudros to Marseilles 23 May 1916, admitted to 44th.Casualty Clearing Station 12 October 1916 suffering with Pyrexia and invalided to England five days later. Drafted to Nelson Battalion from 4th.Reserve Battalion Blandford on 2 January 1917 and joined the Battalion in France from 23 January 1917. Took part in the attack on Gavrelle on 23 April 1917, when Nelson and Drake Battalions went over the top at 04.45hrs. under cover of an artillery barrage, the first line of German trenches being taken quickly but an hour later the attack was ceased at the edge of the village. The village of Gavrelle was finally taken on 29 April 1917 at the cost of some 1500 casualties. The recipient was reported 'Missing' from 24 April 1917 and subsequently assumed killed in action on that date.
