Third China War Medal 1900, bar, 'Relief of Pekin', officially impressed naming - W.J. POPE, AB. HMS. 'Orlando'; 1914-15 Star; Victory Medal 1914-19 - Gnr. W.J. POPE, RN. (WALTER JOHN POPE - Born 2 January 1882 at Burwash, Sussex joined the Royal Navy on 5 July 1897 as a Boy 2nd.class in HMS.'St. Vincent' : Advanced to Boy 1st.class on 7 April 1898 and moved to HMS. 'Agincourt' on 9 November and then to 'Alexandra' from 22 December of that year. Transferred into HMS. 'Orlando' on 16 February 1899 and was advanced to Ordinary Seaman on 2 January 1900 and to Able Seaman from 15 December 1900, whilst still serving in 'Orlando', and was present when the ship went into action during the Third China War. Left 'Orlando' on 25 July 1902 and continued to serve at sea in various ships and shore bases including 'Excellent', the Royal Navy Gunnery School at Whale Island, Portsmouth. Advanced to Acting Gunner from 10 June 1913 and confirmed as Gunner 12 June 1914. During World War One he served in HMS. 'Queen' and HMS. 'Ceres' taking part in the Dardanelles operations, whilst serving in 'Queen': From 25 March 1919 was transferred to the staff of HMS. 'Excellent'. Commissioned Gunner from 10 June 1923. Death recorded on 10 Augustt 1952.
