Regiment and was present at the Battle of the Alma, the action at Balaklava, the Battle of Inkermann and the Siege of Sebastopol. At Inkermann on 5 November 1854, the Regiment fought valiantly, charging the Russians with the 'Minden Yell', and it was here that Major-General Sir George Cathcart was killed whilst gallantly leading fifty men of the Regiment up a hill, later to be known as 'Cathcart's Hill'. The Regiment participated in the Siege of Sebastopol and the operations and assaults on the defences of the city during June and September 1855, but was held in reserve and not brought into action for the final assault on 8 September 1855. It was however involved in the capture of the Russian Fort of Kinburn in October 1855. The Regiment in common with many others faced severe hardships from the harsh weather conditions, disease, and worn out clothing and the recipient is recorded on the Balaklava Roll as 'Since Dead' but as he is not shown listed as a casualty it must therefore be assumed that he died of disease.
