QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL,1ST. (KING'S) DRAGOON GUARDS, DIED OF WOUNDS, 9 NOVEMBER 1901 SWARTKLIP TRANSVAAL,

Bars, 'Cape Colony', 'Orange Free State', 'Transvaal', 'South Africa 1901', officially impressed naming - 3791 Pte. J. WRIGHT, 1st. Dgn.Gds. (Dragoon Guards) : (JAMES WRIGHT - Served with the 1st. (King's) Dragoon Guards, which arrived in South Africa in January 1901 and immediately took part in the pursuit of Boer leader, Christiaan de Wet. By the latter half of 1901 the Regiment was operating in the Transvaal, hunting guerrilla forces which involved numerous small-scale engagements and patrols across the region, and it would have been on one such patrol at Swartklip on 7 November 1901 that the recipient was severely wounded. He died of his wounds two days later. The 1st Dragoon Guards Memorial to those who died in the South African War, is situated in the West Porch of Manchester Cathedral and the recipient is commemorated there.)
