Victory Medal 1914-19 - 16881 Pte. S. FREEZER, Suff. R. (STANLEY FREEZER - Born around 1895 at Shipdham, Norfolk, entered the war in France from 9 January 1916 with 'D' Company, 11th.(Service) Battalion,(Cambridgeshire), Suffolk Regiment : He was killed in action during the attack to the south of the fortified village of La Boiselle on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916 : He was just 21 years of age on the date of his death : During the attack the Battalion was almost immediately destroyed by machine-gun fire, which local agricultural workers described "as like corn being cut down by the scythe" : Of the 850 who attacked that morning, 691 were either killed, wounded or missing : 189 were killed, almost 150 of whom, like the recipient have no known grave and are commemorated on Thiepval Memorial.) : Sold with verification; CWGC. information and related research : Medal mounted on original silk ribbon GVF - £295
