'Good Hope', the flagship of Rear-Admiral Sir Christopher Cradock, commanding the 4th.Cruiser Squadron : Towards the end of September 1914 the Squadron was assigned to search for the German Squadron preying on British merchant ships off the Chilean coast : On the morning of 1 November 1914 the British and German squadrons encountered each other at Coronel : The British ships were no match for the more powerful German armoured cruisers 'Scharnhorst' and 'Gneisenau', which were faster and more heavily armed : In the ensuing battle, Cradock's ships were totally destroyed and HMS.
