ABYSSINIA WAR MEDAL 1867-68 : 3RD.DRAGOON GUARDS :

Correctly named on reverse in embossed relief capital letters - 240 J. Paraman, 3rd.Dragn. Gds. (3rd.Dragoon Guards) : (JOHN PARAMAN - Believed to have been born at Whitechapel, London around 1832 : Enlisted into the 17th.Lancers on 22 June 1855 as Private 1732 : His marriage to Caroline Hunt is recorded at Lambeth, London in 1855 : Transferred to 3rd.Dragoon Guards on 25 February 1857 and was renumbered as Private 240 : Served with the Regiment in India and in 1861 was stationed at Mhow and Musserabad : Only two Squadrons of the Regiment served in Abyssinia in 1867-68, receiving a total of 219 medals sanctioned in 1869 : Eighteen men are recorded as being detached from the Regiment for service with the Transport Train, in Abyssinia : The recipient is confirmed as one of those serving as a 3rd.Class Inspector with the Transport Train and is also noted on the Medal Roll as "Discharged" : He was in fact Discharged at Winchester as 'Time Expired' on 27 July 1868 : In 1871 he is shown as residing in Southwark, London with his wife and twin daughters aged two years, when his occupation is recorded as "Warehouseman".) : Sold with verification : Copy entry British Army, Worldwide Index for 1861 : Copy Muster Rolls : Copy entry Census Record 1871 : Reverse bears a slight trace of solder at 12 o'clock which is commonly found with this particular medal when the suspension has been re-attached : Mounted on a short length of original ribbon : Medal is Toned and Scarce VF - £645
