BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA COMPANY'S MEDAL 1890-1897 : TO A CONFIRMED JAMESON RAIDER:

Reverse 'Rhodesia 1896', no bar, correct style of engraved naming - TROOPR W.GIBSON, MRF. (Matabeleland Relief Force) : (WILLIAM MITCHELL GIBSON - Shown in the Methodist Parish Records for Kingwilliamstown, Cape Province, South Africa, as the son of British immigrants, Robert Mitchell Gibson and his wife Henrietta Elizabeth Louisa, born 19 December 1868 and baptized 10 February 1869 : He served as 1491 Trooper W.M. GIBSON, Bechuanaland Border Police in the Matabeleland Campaign 1893, and was awarded the medal : Subsequently served as W.GIBSON, a Trooper in the Mashonaland Mounted Police, Matabeleland Relief Force Corps, in the Rhodesia Campaign 1896, and was awarded the Clasp for 'Rhodesia 1896', but in addition received a separate medal for 'Rhodesia 1896', the error most likely occurring because only one initial letter was recorded on the medal roll and Gibson had changed his unit : He is confirmed as having taken part in the unsuccessful JAMESON RAID of 1895-96, when he served with 'K' Troop : He gave his place of residence at that time, as Mefeking, Bechuanaland : There is only one man named GIBSON on both the Medal Rolls for 'Matabeleland 1893' and 'Rhodesia 1896', and shown in the list of men confirmed as Jameson Raiders : WILLIAM MITCHELL GIBSON later served in the Second Boer War as a Serjeant-Major with the Kimberley Light Horse, and was present both at the Defence of Kimberley and the Relief of Mafeking : He was discharged on 14 July 1900.) : Sold with verification and related research : A rare medal to a confirmed "JAMESON RAIDER" EF - £1495
