BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA POLICE : CONFIRMED JAMESON RAID PARTICIPANT

British South Africa Company Medal 1890-97, reverse ' Rhodesia 1896'; correctly engraved naming - TSM. A.G. COTTRELL, BSA. Police (ALFRED GEORGE COTTRELL - Was a native of Bristol before emigrating to South Africa where he joined the British South Africa Police serving in Rhodesia and Mashonaland. In December 1895 he took part in the Jameson Raid, as a Serjeant in 'G' Troop serving under the command of Captain Audley Vaughan Gosling. He was taken prisoner at Dornkop when Jameson was forced to surrender to the Boers. When captured he gave his age as twenty-five and his address as Athenian Villa, Stapleton Road, Bristol. During the Second Boer War he served with the Natal Police and was present at the action at Talana, the Defence of Ladysmith and Laing's Nek.
