CRIMEA MEDAL 1854-56 : 2ND. BN. RIFLE BRIGADE :
Bars, 'Alma', 'Sebastopol', officially impressed naming - S. PHILLIPS, 2nd. Batn. Rifle Brgde. (Rifle Brigade) : (STEPHEN DICKINSON PHILLIPS - Born at Foleshill, Warwickshire around 1835, a weaver by trade when he attested for The Rifle Brigade at Coventry on 24 January 1853, then being under age by six months. Posted to 2nd.Battalion from 26 July 1853, he served in the Crimea and was present at the Battle of the Alma and the Siege of Sebastopol. On 5 September 1855 he was WOUNDED in the leg whilst serving in the trenches before Sebastopol during a night raid on a Sap which the Russians were in the course of constructing near to the Redan, and a protective stone wall screen which they had also erected. (A full account of which is published in "Rifle Green In The Crimea") : At the conclusion of the Crimea War the Battalion was deployed to India where it was to take part in the suppression of the Sepoy Mutiny. The recipient was promoted to Corporal from 30 July 1857 and was engaged during the operations against Lucknow in March 1858 : He was promoted to Serjeant from 14 June 1863 and was Discharged on 30 July 1864. He was married in Warwickshire in December 1865 and subsequently resided at Foleshill.
