CRIMEA WAR MEDAL 1854-56 : 21ST. REGIMENT : DIED IN THE CRIMEA

Bars, 'Alma', 'Inkermann', 'Sebastopol' with officially impressed naming - J. BARNETT, 21st. Regt. (Royal Scots Fusiliers) : (JESSE BARNETT - Born at Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire in 1836, by trade an agricultural worker. At the age of seventeen he made the journey to from his home in Wiltshire to the town of Bath, Somerset, where on 31 October 1853 he attested for Army service and on 13 November 1853 joined the 21st. Regiment of Fusiliers, which at that time was based in Dublin. On 15 August 1854 the Regiment sailed from Cork aboard the transport 'Golden Fleece' bound for the Black Sea, arriving off Varna Bay after being at sea for some 34 days. At Varna it joined the Fourth Division under the command of Lieutenant-General Sir George Cathcart. The recipient was present with his Regiment at the Battle of the Alma on 20 September 1854, where the Regiment was only 'lightly engaged' and in consequence suffered only one man killed. On 25 October 1854 the Regiment was directed towards Balaklava to act in conjunction with the other Regiments of the 4th Division to repel any Russian attack, and although it remained in the field all day, it was not engaged. On 5 November 1854 the recipient was present with his Regiment, which was heavily engaged at the Battle of Inkermann, where it suffered severely. Of the 402 men who went into the field of action on that day, seven Officers, six Serjeants and one hundred and fourteen Other Ranks were either killed or wounded, which represented over 25% of the total strength of the Regiment. On 11 December 1854 the recipient was transferred as 'Sick' to Scutari and the Regimental Muster recorded him as 'Sick Absent' throughout 1855.
