Bar, 'Benin 1897', correct style of impressed naming - W.J.BATTERSHILL, Corpl., HMS. 'Phoebe' : (WILLIAM JOHN BATTERSHILL - Born 24 September 1870 at North Huish, Devon, a caretaker on the date of attestation at Newton Abbott, 24 September 1889 : Transferred to Plymouth Division 6 June 1890 and served at various shore bases and at sea in a number of ships, including 'Lion' and 'Sappo' before joining 'Phoebe' on 22 January 1896 : Took part in the Benin Expedition of 1897 for operations against Chief Overiami who had been indulging in human sacrifice and slave trading : During the campaign was employed at Warrigi Base and Sapoba Stockade : Returned to Plymouth Division from May 1897 and re-engaged from 26 March 1901 : Awarded Naval Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 6 November 1904 : Served during World War One at Dunkirk in 1914 and with the Royal Marine Brigade, Pay Staff in the Eastern Mediterranean and France in 1915-16 rising to the rank of Colour-Sergeant : 258 medals for 'Benin 1897' awarded to HMS.'Phoebe'.) : Sold with copy Service Papers : One slight edge bruise to reverse rim not affecting naming : NEF - £345
