Egypt Campaign Medal 1882-89, dated reverse, bar, 'Alexandria 11th. July', correct style of engraved naming - W. MESSER, Lg. Stkr. HMS. Monarch : (WILLIAM MESSER - Born 30 October 1847 at Dane, Dorset, joined the Royal Navy as a Stoker in HMS. 'Asia' on 1 January 1873 : Moved to HMS. 'Argus' on 27 March 1873 and was advanced to Leading Stoker from 6 May 1879 : Returned to HMS. 'Asia' on 4 December 1879 and remained in that ship until 11 January 1882 : Joined HMS. 'Monarch' from 12 January 1882 and was present in the ship when it took part in the attack on the forts of Alexandria on 11 July 1882 : Transferred into HMS. 'Thunderer' from 26 April 1885 and subsequently served once again in HMS. 'Asia' before joining HMS. 'Hercules' on13 June 1886 : Between April 1888 and February 1890 he served in 'Asia', 'Orlando', 'Sultan' and 'Hibernia' before finally returning to HMS.
