EGYPT CAMPAUGN MEDAL 1882-89, 1ST. BN., THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS, WOUNDED AT THE BATTLE OF EL-TEB

Bars, 'El-Teb', 'The Nile 1884-85', undated reverse, correct style of engraved naming - 900 Pte. J. McDONALD, 1/Gord: Highrs.: (Private J. McDONALD - Served with the 1st.Battalion, Gordon Highlanders in the Egypt Campaign of 1884-85 and was wounded at the Battle of El-Teb on 29 February 1884. He recovered from his wounds and was again in action for the Nile Campaign 1885, when the Battalion formed part of the Mounted Infantry Camel Regiment, for the expedition to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum. The recipient is named in the Official Telegram sent from Suakin on 12 March 1884 by Major-General Sir G. Graham to the War Office in London, in which he is confirmed as being wounded in the engagement at El-Teb on 29 February 1884. He is shown on the Battalion Medal Roll for 'The Nile 1884-85' bar as "Dead", and it must be presumed that he died of disease as he is not recorded as being wounded during the Gordon Relief Expedition.) Sold with the official card box of issue which still contains the brown paper envelope for the medal, verification and a copy of the casualty list for El Teb as it appeared in "The Scotsman" newspaper of Thursday, 13 March 1884. The medal is mounted on the original silk ribbon and is in near Mint condition - £795
