Derby R. : (GEORGE HEYWOOD - Sikkim is a small Himalayan state adjoining Tibet : Early in 1888 the Tibetans persuaded the Rajah of Sikkim to erect a fort at Lingtu to obstruct the route through the state : This was in strict contravention of the treaty signed to permit free passage for trade purposes : Despite remonstrations from the Viceroy of India the construction work continued and resulted in a British Force being dispatched in March 1888, to capture the fort : On 20 March the fort was captured and destroyed the following day, after which the force withdrew to Darjeeling : However on 24 September 1888 the Tibetans were found to be fortifying a position in the Jelapla Pass, from which they were dislodged a day later, resulting in the Tibetans suffering the loss of about four hundred casualties : The Tibetans then retired from Sikkim.
