(Royal Sussex Regiment) : (The Regiment did not play a major role in the Tirah Campaign having arrived late in 1897 in order to relieve and replace the Devonshire Regiment : By early December it had been decided that the Army should quit the Tirah and the various columns began their withdrawal : On 27 December 1897 while the bulk of the troops stood fast at a place called Burgh or Barg, a strong detachment led by Lieutenant-Colonel Cafe, Royal Sussex Regiment moved out towards Walai to picquet the heights and protect the flank of General Gaselee's Brigade, during it's withdrawal from China to Chora. These picquets were attacked by the Afridis and the Regiment suffered three men killed and an Officer, Lieutenant Julius, and four Other Ranks wounded : The recipient was one of those killed in this action, the London Gazette dated 5 April 1898, records "gunshot, heart" : One of the men wounded was 4084 Private Walter Knee, who received a severe gunshot to his right shoulder, and his medal is also offered for sale here.) : Sold with verification, copy London Gazette entry, copy Casualty Roll and other related research : Medal mounted on long length of original silk ribbon, a rare casualty : EF - £1095
