INDIA MEDAL 1895, EAST KENT REGIMENT 'THE BUFFS', DIED OF WOUNDS BEDMANAI PASS SEPTEMBER 1897

Bar, 'Punjab Frontier 1897-98', officially engraved naming in correct style of Indian running script - 4584 Lce.Corpl. C.CLARKE, 1st. Bn. 'The Buffs' : (CHARLES CLARKE - In 1897 was serving on the North-West Frontier of India with the 1st. Battalion, East Kent Regiment (The Buffs), which formed part of the Second Brigade, Malakand Field Force, under the command of Brigadier General P.D. Jeffreys. On 20 September 1897 the Battalion was crossing the Bedmanai Pass near the village of Zagai when it became involved in an engagement with the ex-retainers of Umra Khan of Jandol and whilst retiring over difficult ground, the Buffs were closely pressed by these tribesmen. Once the troops reached more open country, the tribesmen were driven off with heavy loss but not before the Buffs had suffered four Officers and ten Other Ranks wounded.
