Thus the Indian Mutiny had begaun. Early in July 1857 the 90th.Light Infantry was deployed to form part of Brigadier-General Sir Henry Havelock's Force of about 1500 men for the relief of the beseiged garrison at Lucknow and moved up from Allahabad to Cawnpore, along the way defeating mutineer forces at the village of Aeng and the bridge over the Pandoo Nuddee. The Relief Column entered Cawnpore on 17 July 1857 only to discover that the captured British women and children had all been butchered : With his small force weakened by losses through enemy action, and disease, Havelock was compelled to await further reinforcements before continuing his advance on Lucknow. These arrived under the command of Major-General Sir James Outram and increased his command to 3,000 men and the advance was resumed. : On 24 September 1857 whilst the column was still some three miles from the Redency, the enemy's cavalry, one thousand strong made a sudden irruption upon the baggage massed at the rear, the men of the 90th.Light Infantry forming the baggage guard gallantly dispersed the whole body, but not without losing some brave Officers and men.
