Bar, 'Cape Colony', officially impressed naming - 4375 Pte. A. SMITH, 1st. Highland Lt. Infy. (Highland Light Infantry) : (ALEXANDER SMITH - Born around 1873, in the Parish of Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, a plumber by trade on 12 October 1891 when he attested for the Highland Light Infantry and was posted to 1st.Battalion : Served at home until 15 February 1894 on which date he was transferred to 2nd.Battalion for service in India : Served on the North West Frontier during 1897-98 and took part in the operations at Malakand; operations in Mamund Country, Buner including the attack and capture of Tanga Pass on 7 January 1898 : Returned home on 26 March 1899 and was later transferred to Army Reserve : Recalled for Army Service as of 7 October 1899 and posted to South Africa with 1st.
