QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, GORDON HIGHLANDERS, WOUNDED IN ACTION DOORNKOP, 29 MAY 1900 :
Bars, 'Cape Colony', 'Paardeberg', 'Driefontein', 'Johannesburg', officially impressed naming - 5906 Pte. J. McGREGOR, Gordon Highrs. (Gordon Highlanders) : (JOHN McGREGOR - Born in the Parish of Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire around 1879, a tailor by trade when he attested at Aberdeen on 23 January 1897. Initially posted to 2nd. Battalion Gordon Highlanders but transferred to 1st.Battalion from 9 December 1898. Served at Home until 8 November 1899 when the Battalion was sent to South Africa for service in the Boer War. Wounded by a gun-shot to the groin in the action at Doornkop on 29 May 1900 and invalided Home on 30 October 1900. At Doornkop on the third day of the Battle of Johannesburg the Battalion was attacking an enemy held ridge as part of a force of seven battalions under the command of Lieutenant-General Iain Hamilton, where the Gordons sustained the majority of the casualties. The Battalion suffered two Officers killed with seven others wounded including their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel H.H. Burney who was severely wounded, fourteen Other Ranks killed with a further six who later died of their wounds and a total of sixty-six Other Ranks wounded.
