QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, OXFORDSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY, SEVERELY WOUNDED NEAR WEPENER 1901

Bars, 'Cape Colony', 'Orange Free State', 'Transvaal', 'South Africa 1901', officially impressed naming - 1707 Pte. F. STYLES, Oxford Lt. Infy : (Light Infantry) : (FREDERICK STYLES - Born around 1873 at Downley, near Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, a chair polisher by trade when on 9 February 1891, at High Wycombe he attested for the Oxfordshire Light Infantry : Promoted Corporal from 7 May 1894, Sergeant from 26 March 1895 and was Re-engaged on 26 May 1896. Embodied Sergeant from 17 January 1900 and served in South Africa with 1st. Battalion, Mounted Infantry from 22 September 1900. SEVERELY WOUNDED at Jammersburg Drift, near Wepener on 2 September 1901 and returned home on 5 January 1902. Discharged as "Medically Unfit" on 20 May 1902. Service Papers endorsed "Deceased", date not recorded but believed to have occurred in 1903. Medal with bars for 'Cape Colony' and 'Orange Free State' verified on Roll dated 30 September 1901 at Vlackfontein, Orange River Colony; bars for 'Transvaal' and 'South Africa 1901' loose on ribbon and confirmed on Roll dated 3 March 1903 at Chatham.These Bars presumably issued after the recipient's death which accounts for not being attached to the medal.) : Sold with verification, copy Service Papers and copy Casualty Roll.
