FREDERICK HIGGENS, RGA. : (FREDERICK HIGGENS - Born around 1864 at Sutton Valence, Maidstone, Kent , a warehouse clerk on the date of attestation, 13 October 1885 : Served at Home, Gibraltar and Malta prior to being sent to South Africa on 3 February 1900 : Returned Home on 23 July 1900 and was sent to Bermuda from 20 November 1903 : Returned Home again on 22 December 1906 and on 12 January 1907 was discharged with the rank of Corporal from No.3 Company RGA. on "termination of his second period of engagement" having completed in excess of twenty-one years service : During his service he had attained the rank of Sergeant but because of various infringements had been reduced to the ranks, he was promoted back to Corporal on 1 February 1902 : He was obviously an intelligent man and was in possession of a 1st.Class Education Certificate awarded on 26 March 1890 and a SCHOOLMASTER'S Certificate awarded 23 May 1890. On his Discharge document he is shown as, "A painstaking and well educated N.C.Officer. An experienced clerk.
