QUEEN'S SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL, SEAFORTH HIGHLANDERS, KILLED IN ACTION MAGERSFONTEIN :

Bar, 'Cape Colony', officially impressed naming - 1216 Pte. A. WATSON, 2:Sea:Highrs: (Seaforth Highlanders) : (ALEXANDER WATSON - Attested for the Seaforth Highlanders on 13 May 1884 and sailed for service in India aboard the SS. 'Jumna' on 9 October 1884: With the outbreak of the Second Boer War the Battalion was deployed for service in South Africa and arrived at the Cape around 16 November 1899: The Seaforths were brigaded with 2nd. Black Watch; 1st. Highland Light Infantry and 1st. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders to form the Third Highland Brigade under the command of Major-General Wauchope, as part of Lord Methuen's Kimberley Relief Force. The Seaforths joined the Brigade on the Modder River shortly before going into action at Magersfontein : The recipient was KILLED IN ACTION on 11 December 1899 at the disastrous Battle of Magersfontein and was buried on the battlefield where he fell : At Magersfontein the Seaforths suffered the loss of five Officers and fifty-three Other Ranks killed or mortally wounded, with a further seven Officers and one hundred and thirty-six Other Ranks wounded and fourteen taken prisoner : The recipient's remains were later reinterred in the West End Cemetery, at Kimberley : He is commemorated on the Seaforth Boer War Memorial at Dingwell, Scotland and also on their memorial in the Old Military Cemetery at Magersfontein.) : Sold with the original silk medal ribbon contained in the original card box of issue, and a portion of the original Registered envelope, both addressed to the recipient's father, Mr. T.
