(Staff-Serjeant Armourer JAMES SHAW - Born 21 September 1879 at Reading Berkshire, a Gunmaker residing at Kingston-Upon-Thames, Surrey when in February 1901, he attested for the South African Constabulary. He proceeded to South Africa in March 1901 with his service counting from 31 March 1901 : Served with 'C' (Eastern) Division : Promoted from 3rd,Class Trooper to Staff-Serjeant Armourer on 8 August 1901 : Received an Official Reprimand on 2 December 1901 for, 'Using improper language' : By early March 1902 he was proving to be inefficient and unsuitable to carry out the work required of an Armourer in the field: He was therefore discharged from the Constabulary on 11 April 1902.) : Note initial letter for first name on the medal is 'G', in accordance with the Roll, but Supplementary Roll for the award of two date bars to which the recipient is also entitled, shows the initial letter correcttly as 'J'.
