SOUTH AFRICA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1877-79 : 57TH. FOOT

Bar, '1879' , correctly engraved naming - 50/166 SERGT. E. DUNN, 57TH. FOOT (West Middlesex Regiment) : (Sergeant EDWARD DUNN - is confirmed on the Medal Roll as being " Engaged against the Zulus in 1879". The Regiment was in action at Inyezane on 22 January 1879 and Gingindhlovu on 2 April 1879. At the Battle of Gingindhlovu the 57th. faced it's most significant test of the war, the British laager was attacked by a Zulu impi of approximately 11,000 warriors. The Regiment held the right face of the square, a position that bore the brunt of the initial Zulu charge. As the Zulus advanced through the tall grass, the Regiment maintained the legendary discipline of the "Die Hards" and held it's fire until the enemy was within effective range of their Martini-Henry rifles. The ensuing volleys were devastating. The Zulus got to within twenty yards of the trenches but the steady concentrated fire of the Regiment and that of the neighboring 60th.Rifles proved to be impenetrable.)
